Narrative meets numbers
Build a budget that supports the work the proposal promises
A grant budget should tell the same story as the narrative. Every material cost needs a purpose, basis, timing, owner, and relationship to the proposed activities and expected results.
Start with activities and rules
List the work, people, timing, quantities, partners, and resources required, then check the official cost categories, allowability rules, indirect-cost treatment, match, and documentation requirements.
Document each assumption
Record how salary, fringe, travel, equipment, supplies, contracts, participant support, and other estimates were calculated so reviewers can test consistency and authorized staff can update them.
Reconcile the full package
Names, staffing levels, participant counts, dates, activities, outcomes, and totals should agree across the narrative, work plan, budget, justification, forms, and attachments.
